They are not pushed really close together or anything, so there is a little bit of natural spacing.Īs soon as I start to weave, the band begins to narrow and draw in. Here is my warp before I began weaving and the threads are all sitting in order. I have some measurements here to demonstrate just how much narrower. Tip 6- Your woven band will be much, much narrower than your warp Don’t worry about those first couple of inches, I generally cut that part off and don’t use it. It takes a little time for the warp to come together and for you to find the right amount of weft and warp tension, as well as a suitable beat. To be honest, your first 1.5 – 2″ is probably not going to be so pretty. Tip 5- Use the first 2 inches as practice This is something that each inkle weaver needs to find a sweet spot for, but a hint is that you need enough tension so that your weft thread is not looped, bubbled or otherwise really visible at the edges, but not so much that your edges end up bumpy, lumpy or wavy rather than nice and straight. You want to really pull each weft pick into place and feel it move to create a very firm band. If I’m asked how much tension to place on your edges with your weft thread, I would say probably more than you think. Your warp threads are under high tension and the weave is warp faced, not balanced. If you come from rigid heddle weaving, you will be used to fixing up your edges as the weft travels around the warp threads, especially if you use my neat edges technique. Tip 4- Weft tensioning is different to other weaving. You can also wedge an additional piece at the top back peg if needed. You should do your best to achieve really good tension using your tensioning peg, but if you feel you are lacking a little, you can take a small section of c ardboard separator and wedge that in at the starting peg, underneath your band. Once again, the front of the loom is pressed against my body for sturdiness and ease of beating. My favourite position is sitting in my recliner with my feet up. The loom rests on the edge of the table by placing the horizontal wooden bar against it, and the front of the loom rests at about the bottom of my bra level (sorry, couldn’t think of a better description!) Note the comfortable, high backed chair with additional cushion to keep my back comfy. If I’m using a table to rest the back of the loom on, that position would look something like this: I also like to rest the loom against my body to keep it sturdy, as I find that feels most natural to me. Some inkle weavers will clamp the loom to a table to keep it sturdy but I like to have it close to my body where I can comfortably reach to change sheds and beat. But it’s still important to think about your posture and find the most comfortable ways to weave, especially if you’re going to be at it for a while. One of the bonuses of an inkle loom is that you can take it anywhere. Tip 2- Find a comfortable position in which to weave If you’ve never seen an inkle loom in action, my Youtube series in which we weave a lovely floral band, from start to finish is an excellent place to start: When you are ready to weave, you an either push down on the warp threads to achieve a shed or lift them up to achieve the other shed. In the warping process, you alternate between heddled and unheddled warp threads. There are only two sheds on an inkle loom – up and down. The Woolery have put together a nifty starter’s kit that includes an Inklette, yarn to get you started, and Anne Dixon’s fabulous pattern book. Ashford makes two sizes, the Inkle Loom and the Inklette. If you’re an absolute beginner weaver, an inkle loom is the perfect way to test the waters without making a big investment. Inkle looms are simple devices that won’t take up much space and won’t break the bank either. If you’ve been thinking about starting to weave on an inkle loom, I strongly encourage you to have a go. Inkle loom weaving is so fun, easy to learn and affordable to begin. New to rigid heddle weaving? Controls are WAY, WAY, WAY more clunky than X-Tension. To me, X2 is the start of what the current X games are known for - a galactic sandbox where you're free to do whatever you want. Was it fun? Not really, but I got real good at dodging khaak lasers. Then, I started to build small stations which helped me corner the silicon market, which turned out to be a pretty stable cash cow. So I spent about 3 hours doing piracy, capturing ships and selling them, until I had enough money to start hauling energy out of war zones, which net me a good profit. Profit margins are RAZOR THIN, which means if you want to make money, you'd better get ready to play dirty, because playing as an honest space trucker like you could in X-Tension isn't going to cut it. The economy simulator here is both realistic and out of whack. I had trouble making enough credits to cover my ship maintenance. Forget about starting an interstellar trading empire or a mercenary fleet power broker. With this freedom comes a sheer vertical learning curve that is frankly, frightening. It's another sandbox focused game, similar to X-Tension, but with much more freedom. I've been playing the damn series for a good part of two decades, and I had A LOT of trouble getting started. X2: The Threat: Spoiler, the threat is khaak. But you can REALLY see the love the developers put into this game. Prices fluctuate, factions war against each other, and you can really tell the distinctiveness in ship designs from faction to faction. Ships have interiors (something sorely missed in the sequels) and the universe feels. The plot is not so much non-sensical as non-existent, and graphically, the game still looks decent. You can do a lot more stuff now, like bounty hunting, trading, etc, and you're free to fly whatever ship you see fit as long as your bank allows, and you can even start your own little fleet. X-Tension: This is the OG X game except with more sandbox elements added on. You're pretty much stuck in your little starter ship, the AI is rubbish, controls suck, the plot is sheer eurojank, and there's literally nothing to do once you progress past the first few hours. The flight models are very basic, and a lot of the more refined gameplay elements we see later are plain absent. This is a pretty clunky game and I can see why people called it an elite knockoff. X-Beyond the Frontier: Nostaligia goggles DO NOT hold up. Playtime: Generally finishing the main quest lines and screwing around until I get bored. Games played: The OG X-Beyond the Frontier, X-Tension, X2-The Threat, X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict, X3: Albion Prelude, X:Rebirth + DLCs. I've been an active modder for the series since X2, and I recently found my original boxed version of the first X game, so figured why not. I've tried to avoid killing any pirates (even the ones who attack me).So I didn't actually *mean* to start an X games marathon. I've hung out in pirate space doing missions for them as much as I can. And, most annoying, the Duke's headquarters is still red for me so I can't take any Duke's missions. Most of the larger clumps of pirates are blue to me now, but there are still plenty of reds. The Yaki and I are pretty tight right now, but the pirates still seem a bit hesitant. I'm still in midgame so I can't have the whole universe against me, but if I happen to see a tasty looking M6 wander into the wrong neighborhood, I'm not going to say no. For my current playthrough, I'm doing a Bankrupt Assassin start, and I'm trying something different: I'm friends with the pirates and the Yaki and I'm not really bothered by my relationship with other races. Stuart produced Smith’s 2021 album The Cry of the Heart, yet he hasn’t released anything of his own since 2017’s Way Out West, a fine album that found the participation of Native American musicians emphasising Stuart’s broad view of “American music”. She had struggled for months and months and months to get back to normal but she’s kind of there now – she’s back to singing and we have made a new record and she’s performing again at the Grand Ole Opry.” “She was hospitalised for 11 days and almost died. In 1997 he did, and they remain together today. Stuart first saw Smith sing at a country fair when he was 11 years old, even then telling his mother “one day I’m gonna marry her”. Stuart’s enthusiasm for working with his elders found him producing the likes of Porter Wagoner and producing then marrying singer Connie Smith. His songs pretty much tell you who he was as a person.” I miss playing music and hanging out with him. “He was a country boy, but he was a worldly country boy – he could talk with a head of state or a farmer. “Every day with John was a life lesson,” says Stuart. It was a friendship that would endure even after Stuart set off on his own in the late 80s. So Stuart joined Johnny Cash’s band (and married Cash’s daughter Cindy in 1983). Thus, in 1972, Marty’s formal education ended and he began criss-crossing the US playing mandolin with Flatt – well before he was old enough to drive a car or buy a beer.įlatt was forced to disband his outfit due to failing health in 1978. So much so he was invited to join Flatt, who had scored huge crossover success as half of bluegrass duo Flatt and Scruggs by contributing the theme music to TV series The Beverly Hillbillies (and Foggy Mountain Breakdown to Bonnie and Clyde’s car chase). Born in Philadelphia, Mississippi, he joined country-gospel group the Sullivan Family aged 12 and, upon sharing the stage with Lester Flatt’s bluegrass group one evening, the 13-year-old mandolinist made quite an impression. Stuart has been obsessed with country music from infancy. I think music engages with pretty much all who hear us.” Recently, he says, “we played for a Grateful Dead-type audience and they loved what we did. Unsurprisingly, they command a broad church. His band the Fabulous Superlatives’ dynamic performances are a high-wire act involving shared harmonies, a capella gospel numbers, honky tonk pathos and kinetic country rock. Affable and engaging, Stuart, 63, wears a wry grin, elaborately tailored stage suits and a shock of salt-and-pepper hair. By using this website, you consent to the use of cookies. Just remember to not leave the password in a publicly accessible location. We want you to have the best possible experience while using our service. This will open up WinZip and present encryption and password protection options. After the RAR file has been converted, right-click on the file and select Encrypt from the menu. To password protect a RAR file using WinZip, first convert the RAR file to a Zip file by following the steps above. There are of course utilities that let determined users crack RAR files so they’re not completely impenetrable, but the encryption and password protection is enough to stop anyone looking around or accidentally seeing files that aren’t for them when on a shared computer. This gives them considerably more protection from unintended users than other archive files, letting you share sensitive data more comfortably. One of the biggest attractions of RAR files which makes them stand out from some other archive formats is the ability to encrypt them and protect them with passwords. Select all the files that have been unzipped and compress them with WinZip to a Zip fileĮncrypting & Password Protecting RAR Files.Click “Unzip to:” and choose the location where you would like to save your file.WinZip is a powerful RAR file converter, and converting a RAR file to ZIP is easy. A ZIP file won’t give you access to the same encryption tools, but if the person you’re sending the file to won’t be able to open it otherwise then this may be necessary. Converting a RAR file to ZIP lets you create archive files for users who don’t have access to WinZip. The formats you’ll most likely have heard of are ZIP or 7z files, which are accessible without specialist software. In fact, one of the biggest strengths of WinZip is the ability to convert RAR files to other archive formats. You don’t have to restrict yourself to RAR files when compressing multiple files into easy-to-use archives. The size of the archive should be much less than the sum of the individual files thanks to its high quality compression, giving you the option to upload and download it quickly. WinZip will then create the Zip file as per your instructions, and you can share it or store it as you like. Under Share or save Zip create the new Zip file to the location of your choice or email it directly to your chosen recipient.Select the file (or files) you want to create as a Zip folder. Here are a few simple steps, that of course begin with opening WinZip. The process is easy, much the same as opening RAR files. While you can’t create RAR files using WinZip, you can create Zip files, which are similar to RAR files and have many of the same benefits. If someone requests something to be sent in RAR format, or if you want to take advantage of the benefits of using a RAR format, you can use WinZip. Like Zip files, RAR files can be encrypted with a password to ensure that only the person who needs to see it can access it, even if someone else accesses that computer. So when would you use a RAR file? To start with, compiling a long list of files like images or audio files into a single downloadable RAR file will speed up the transfer and download times when sending it to a friend or colleague.Īnother instance might be if you need to send a contract or a document that isn’t for public eyes to a colleague. The difference is that RAR supports error recovery and multi-volume archives making it much easier to transfer and download complex networks of files and folders. You might be wondering why RAR files are used instead of ZIP files which are immediately accessible natively through the computer. The software lets you open RAR files in moments, accessing all the volumes within the archive. If you find yourself with a RAR file extension unable to open it, that’s where WinZip comes in. RAR files can be split up into multi-volume archives and the compression lets multiple files condense down into a single small archive that’s easy to transfer. The archive generally contains multiple files, although it can be just a single file, and you’ll need to extract the files from the archive in order to use them. The RAR file format is short for Roshal Archive Compressed file, and is a compressed archive from WinRAR. If you’re familiar with ZIP files, you’ll get to grips with RAR files in no time as the concept is fairly similar. Rated 5 stars by CNET What is a RAR file extension?Ī RAR file extension is something you might come across sooner or later as you transfer files for business use. |
